1816-1882 French/American Regis-Francois Gignoux Gallery French painter who was active in the United States from 1840 to 1870. He was born in Lyon, France and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under with the French painter Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). Gignoux arrived in the United States from France in 1840 and opened a studio in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, and was the first president of the Brooklyn Art Academy. George Inness (1825-1894) and John LaFarge (1835-1910) were both his students. Gignoux was the only member of the Hudson River School to specialize in snow scenes. He returned to France in 1870 and died in Paris in 1882. 1661-1743 Francois Desportes Locations French painter. He is best known for his hunting scenes and paintings of animals. Desportes, who began as a portrait painter, was among the first to paint landscapes from nature; for that practice he was held to be eccentric. Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts
(ca 1630 - after 1683) was a Flemish painter of still life and trompe-l'œil active in the second half of the seventeenth century. Gysbrechts was born in Antwerp, where, according to the RKD, he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1660. He signed his name with "CND". His first known paintings date from 1659 in Antwerp. He painted in 1664 in Regensburg, from 1665-1668 in Hamburg and from 1668 to 1672 at the court in Copenhagen.
